ASPHALT DREAMS
In ASPHALT DREAMS we blended real-life talents with AI-generated environments. Meaning all models were styled, lit, and shot in the studio, while the backgrounds were created using AI models.
Beyond testing the limits of light accuracy and consistency of locations, the goal was also to push the boundaries with uncommon angles and wide lenses to see how well we can match them.
The secret sauce? A mix of MidJourney, Stable Diffusion, Photoshop... and patience. A lot of patience. With AI still in its early stages, it wasn’t just about pressing a button. We researched the shoot requirements, ran countless tests, tweaked perspectives and fine-tuned depth maps to make everything feel seamless.
A big takeaway? AI is improving rapidly, but it’s still a blackbox in certain key factors and has its weaknesses when it comes to detail. You can generate high-resolution assets, but achieving realism requires grain and a bokeh to compensate for the lack of fine detail (especially with those wide lenses).
Do I still prefer shooting on a ‘real’ set? 100% - and I always will. But there’s no denying the potential of AI to complement and elevate photography in the right places (and knowing where it cannot).
A huge thank you to Lotta Meyer for designing this incredible collection and to everyone at Protokoll Group and MyimikryAI for their patience and geekiness during post-production.
